Health Policy and the Practice of Medicine

This is an optional enrichment course for first and second year medical students. The goal of this optional enrichment course is to provide medical students exposure to core health policy content areas and current issues in health policy and to consider the impact of health policy and system design on the future practice of medicine.
The course is sponsored by: the UMMS Student Health Policy Interest Group , the UMass Center for Health Policy and Research , the Department of Family Medicine and Community Health , UMMS Commonwealth Medicine and the Office of Medical Education.
Course format:
A series of six 2-hour evening sessions focusing on health policy topics relevant to the practice of medicine. The basic format is for guest speakers to present both national perspective and local implications of key health policy topics. Topics for 2003 include: introduction to health policy and politics, health economics, pharmaceutical health policy, measuring and improving quality of care, and improving access to health services.
Course requirements:
Participation in of 5/6 sessions and completion of team-based health policy project is required to receive credit. Final presentation of group projects will be made to a panel of State health policy makers on May 6th, 2003.
