This film describes the experience of local jazz singer, Lisa Thorson, in living a full life after a spinal cord injury.

 

Medication Exercise
Students will be asked to keep track of multiple “medications” over the course of the clerkship.

 

The Independent Living Philosophy and Medical Care
This session will cover the IL philosophy and its relationship to providing quality medical care.

 

Health Promotion

Secondary Conditions
This brief lecture/ discussion will focus on health promotion/ secondary conditions among PWDs and the physician’s role in prevention/treatment.

Services For People With Disability/ Consumer Direction
This session will cover the concept of consumer direction and describe services for persons with disabilities.

 

( Worcester   Senior   Center ) Community Health and Social Services for Older Adults
Students will join the Elder Clerkship students at the Worcester Senior Center for an overview of the system of community services and supports for elders.

 

Medicare and Medicaid: The Basics
This discussion on Medicare and Medicaid will describe these programs, their role in the work of physicians and their impact on the lives of PWDs.

Shadow A Person With a Disability
Each student will spend the day with a person with a disability to learn about living with a disability.

Diagnoses, Speech Impairments and Deaf Dept/Services
Students will participate in activities, including role plays, designed to show them what it is like to be a deaf person in a hearing world.

Parents of PWDs will speak about raising their children with disabilities, along with their experiences with the medical system and advocating for services and supports

 

Sexuality and Disability
Sonya Perduta-Fulginiti will lead a lecture/discussion about sexuality and disability.

 

Childbirth
This session will cover childbirth and parenting with a disability, including a video about  the experience of Cindy and Ted Purcell, who both have spinal cord injuries and are raising a young son.

Lisa Iezzoni, M.D.   Disability, the Physician’s Role and

Challenges Dealing with Medical Care
Lisa Iezzoni, M.D., a physician with a disability, will talk about health care quality and barriers to health care for PWDs.

 

Bob Master, M.D. and the Community Medical Alliance
Bob Master, M.D., will talk about his innovative program for providing medical care to PWDs. Consumers who receive care from CMA will talk about their experiences with this approach.

 

 

Assessment Process/

Overview
The purpose of this session will be to inform students about issues specific to performing a medical assessment for PWDs.

 

Disability Evaluation
This lecture/ discussion will describe the process of establishing eligibility for disability benefits.

 

Standardized Patient

Visit Clinic
Students will have the opportunity to perform a simulated medical interview with PWDs acting in the role of Standardized Patient Educators.

Students will be given an explanation and hands-on experience with different types of wheelchairs.

Fred Fay: Personal Experience and Disability Advocacy
Students will visit the home of Fred Fay where he talked about his lifestyle and the supports that make it possible for him to live a full life while lying down.

Students will have a tour of the Massachusetts State House and a discussion of the state legislative process.

 

Meeting with a Legislator
A legislator (Senator Fred Berry, invited) will explain his work, his role in legislation for PWDs and his experiences in receiving medical services.
