Course Descriptions
PhD Courses
N800 History/Philosophy of Nsg Science
This course is designed to prepare students to systematically analyze epistemological, ontological, and metatheoretical perspectives in the philosophy of science, while also considering the implications for scientific inquiry, theory development, and knowledge development in nursing.
N801 Qualitative Methods
This course is designed to provide students with an in-depth study of major qualitative designs and methods used to build substantive knowledge in nursing. Emphasis is placed upon experiential learning of methods and techniques to design studies along with analysis and interpretation of data.
N802 Quantitative Methods
This course is designed to provide students with an advanced study of designs, methods, instrumentation, and measurement for quantitative nursing research. Students develop a research prospectus.
N803 Emerging Nursing Theories
This course is designed to focus on the critical analysis of nursing frameworks, models, and theopries for practice, research and education. Focus is on theory development and analysis with application of criteria for developing theory in nursing science.
N804 Mea/Intru in Clin Research
This is an advanced graduate-level course that focuses on measurement theory and the processes of instrument evaluation, refinement, and development. This course will exp-lore the use of quantitative and qualitative procedures to measure clinically important variables. In addition, there will be an emphasis on the interaction of conceptual, methodological, culturally and pragmatic considerations that are essential to understand when measuring variables among clinical populations.
N805 State of the Discipline
This course provides students with a critical examination of the current state of knowledge in the discipline. Students analyze, evaluate and synthesize selected aspects of this knowledge.
N806 Advanced Nursing Research
This course provides students with an opportunity to apply the content from research, theory, and other coursework by developing a research grant proposal. The focus of this course will be on grant-writing techniques, proposal development and research ethics.
N807 Doctoral Seminar
This course integrates scholarshsip and policy central to the roles of nurse scientist, leader and educator that influence the future of nursing and health care. A forum for the development, refinement, and completion of the student's proposal is emphasized.
N815 Statistical Analysis of Data
This course provides students with an introduction to inferential statistics. Particular emphasis is placed on practical application, rather than mathematical theory. Topics covered include t-tests, analysis of variance (ANOVA), analysis of covariance (ANCOVA), repeated measures ANOVA, correlational analysis and multiple regression.
N890 Advanced Statistics
This course builds on NG815 (Statistical Analysis of Data) to provide more in-depth instruction on practical applications of multivariate data analysis, focusing on statistical issues and techniques that students are likely to encounter in their research. Topics covered include pre-analysis data screening, assessment of model fit for analysis of variance and covariance (ANOVA / ANCOVA) and linear regression, model selection techniques, multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA), and logistic regression.
