Chancellor's Message

ChancellorAs the Commonwealth of Massachusetts’ only public academic health sciences center, the University of Massachusetts Worcester (UMW) takes very seriously its mission to serve the people of our state through national distinction in health sciences education, research and public service. With our clinical partner, UMass Memorial Health Care, and our other educational affiliates, we also share in the goal of national distinction in patient care. We believe these components are complementary and inseparable.

The Graduate School of Nursing (GSN) at UMW is a full participant in the phenomenal growth and distinguished reputation of our institution, and is fully committed to educating advanced practice nurses, nurse educators and scientists to fill the need for well-prepared nursing professional staff in every health care setting and situation. From its inception in 1985, the GSN has been a leader in forming alliances which enhance the quality and delivery of patient care throughout our academic health sciences center. Under the leadership of its dean, Paulette Seymour Route, PhD, RN, the GSN has forged partnerships that result in enhanced educational, service and research opportunities for students. These initiatives are supported by an exceptional faculty that includes a number GSN master’s and doctoral alumni who create an ongoing legacy of commitment and service to our institution and the citizens of our region.

GSN students thrive in a collaborative environment where innovative education and practice models improve health and quality of care for vulnerable and underserved populations. GSN activities in the community, the region, and around the world enhance health and health sciences education and give new meaning to the concept of public service. Based on its historical achievements, the GSN will continue to be a leader in nursing and health care as it cultivates future deans and directors of nursing programs, nurse scientists, faculty, advanced practice nurses and chief nursing executives.

In all that we do at the University of Massachusetts Worcester, we are committed to supporting the professional, intellectual and emotional growth of every member of our community, so they may have the opportunity to fulfill their potential and achieve their professional goals. I invite you to learn more about the GSN through this catalogue.
