NursingCAS Instructions for the University of Massachusetts Worcester

Applicants interested in University of Massachusetts Worcester’s graduate programs should apply through NursingCAS. NursingCAS is the online, centralized application service for nursing programs. Visit www.nursingcas.org and click “Apply Here” to initiate your application. And then click on “Create Account” and complete the required fields in order to start your application. NursingCAS fee is separate from UMass Graduate School of Nursing  application fee, payment is made online on NursingCAS.    If UMass Graduate School of Nursing is the only school you are applying to through NursingCAS then you will be charged $65.00.  If UMass Graduate School of Nursing is not the first school you applied through NursingCAS then you be charged $35.00. Additionally, please review the information below carefully and we recommend that you review this information before you begin your application as well. Although, some sections of the NursingCAS application are marked “optional” please follow the guidelines below for the University of Massachusetts Worcester requirements and note that your application will not be considered until ALL elements listed below as “University of Massachusetts Worcester NursingCAS Requirements” are completed and submitted.

All official transcripts must be mailed from the issuing institution’s registrar’s office directly to NursingCAS. In order to expedite the processing be sure to include the Transcript Request Form.

Coursework

Required

Be sure to have a copy of your transcript(s) in hand in order to complete this section. All college level course work (including in-progress course work) must be entered into the application in this section. There is a short, instructional video posted here on how to accurately complete this section. And detailed instructions are posted here. This will be the most time-consuming aspect of the application process. However, this is a very important part of the application process.

You have the option of using the Coursework Entry Service if you wish to have NursingCAS staff enter in your coursework on your behalf.
Tests Required
In this section enter in if you have taken or plan to take the GRE. Request scores be sent directly to UMass Worcester Graduate School of Nursing.  Do not send scores to NursingCAS.

International Applicants Only: In this section enter in if you have taken or plan to take the TOEFL.  The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is required from international students who have not earned a degree in a country where English is the primary language.

Professional Experience  
In this section enter in your work experience, any honors/awards, activities (such as community service, offices held), and list any certifications and registration/license information.
References Required.
All UMass Worcester graduate programs require at 3 letters of recommendation. Depending on which program you are applying to follow the guidelines below. And submit your required references via NursingCAS. 

Graduate Entry Program:
  • 3 letters of recommendation from people with whom you have been in contact with in the last five years. 2 academic (from former faculty members) and 1 professional.

Masters of Science in Nursing, Pre-Master’s Program, Post Master’s Certificate Programs:
  • 3 letters of recommendation from people with whom you have been in contact with in the last five years. 1 academic (from a former faculty member), 1 professional, and 1 from a professional nurse who has been recently responsible for evaluating your professional nursing practice.

DNP Programs:

  • Post-MSN DNP applicants:must submit 3 letters of recommendation from people with whom you have been in contact with in the last five years:

A recent supervisor who can evaluate APN employment experience, An academic reference, A nurse who can evaluate your leadership potential as an APN with a DNP
  • BSN to DNP applicants: must submit 3 letters of recommendation from people with whom you have been in contact with in the last five years. 1 academic (former faculty members) and 2 professional (1 of the professional references must evaluate your leadership potential)
  • GEP to DNP applicants: must submit 3 letters of recommendation from people with whom you have been in contact with in the last five years. 2 academic (former faculty members) and 1 professional reference that can evaluate your leadership potential.

PhD Programs:
  • 3 letters of recommendation from people with whom you have been in contact with in the last five years. 1 recommendation must be from a recent supervisor who can evaluate your employment experience (current or previous); two recommendations should be academic references from persons who have academic doctoral degrees and can evaluate your academic potential.
  • BS to PhD applicants only: All 3 references must be academic (one must be from your major advisor). 
Personal Statement Required
Required to be uploaded to Nursing CAS.
Depending on which program you are applying to please respond to the following questions in this section. Note you must respond to ALL questions for the program you are applying to in ONE statement.

Graduate Entry Program:
Why are you choosing to pursue a career as an advanced practice nurse in you chosen specialty (Adult Gerontological Acute Critical Care, Adult Gerontological Primary Care and Family Nurse Practitioner?  Please be as specific as possible. The essay should be no longer than 500 words.

Masters of Science in Nursing, Pre-Master’s Program, Post Master’s Certificate Programs:
Why are you choosing to pursue a career as an advanced practice nurse in you chosen specialty (Adult Gerontological Acute Critical Care, Adult Gerontological Primary Care and Nurse Educator)? Please be as specific as possible. The essay should be no longer than 500 words.

DNP Programs: Post Masters, BS to DNP and GEP to DNP
Prepare a brief, but explicit statement addressing the following points:
  • Your reasons, personal and/or professional, for pursuing a program of study to become an advanced practice nurse with a DNP. (this response should be 250 words)
  • Your career plans as an advanced practice nurse with a DNP after graduation and in the future. (this response should be 250 words)
  • What is your role, now and in the future, to decrease health disparities for underserved and diverse populations to meet the goals of Health People 2020? (this response should be 500 words)

PhD Programs:
Please respond carefully to the questions below. Your responses will be used to evaluate your writing skills and the match between your goals, research focus and experiences and that of the UMass Worcester faculty. Your response should not exceed 5,000 words.

  • Why are you pursuing doctoral study in nursing at this time? Include a statement of your career goals.
  • What do you hope to accomplish in your program?
  • Please describe a problem area in nursing science that you plan to study in your PhD program. What professional or personal experiences have contributed to the development of your interest in this area?
  • Why did you specifically select our program?


Save your statement and title it “U.Mass Worcester” and don’t forget to attach your saved statement to the University of Massachusetts Worcester in the Designations section before you e-submit your application.

In this section you will select University of Massachusetts Worcester University’s program, if University of Massachusetts Worcester is the only school you apply to through NursingCAS then you will be charged $65. Monitor the Status of Your Application  
Monitor the Status of Your Application:
The “My Messages” section of the NursingCAS application will include any messages that NursingCAS or a school has sent to you. Please check your “My Messages” to see if you have received any vital information about your application. Messages will be sent to the “My Messages” inbox and your personal email address that you created your account with.

Use the “Quick Status Menu” options to check to see if your Transcript(s), Reference(s), or Payment(s) have been received after you submit them. To check to see which Designations you have selected (in other words programs you have applied to) by clicking on the Designations option under the Quick Status menu. The GPA Calculations option under the Quick Status menu will display any GPA calculations NursingCAS has generated for you based on the coursework data you entered. Your application has been “verified” once your GPA Calculations are complete. Learn more about “verification”.
