Each program offers specialization that consists of required and elective courses appropriate to the field and a qualifying examination conducted by the program faculty and thesis research sponsored by a faculty member of the program. Requirements for specialization are detailed in descriptions of the PhD Academic Programs, Faculty and Courses (graduate directors oversee these aspects of their programs).
The following requirements apply to all GSBS students:
Core Curriculum All first-year students must take:
- Biomedical Sciences Block I, five credits
- Biomedical Sciences Block II, five credits
- Biomedical Sciences Block III, five credits
- Laboratory rotations (minimum of two), three or four credits each six-to-eight credits
Second Year
- Responsible Conduct of Science, one credit
Specialization
- Advanced and elective courses and rotations to be selected within guidelines set by the department/program of specialization minimum, 14 credits
- Thesis research, 55 credits
