Building Endowment for Innovation

Securing the Future for New Faculty Positions, Fellowships and Breakthrough Initiatives

Distinguished chairs attract and retain senior clinical and basic researchers with outstanding records of leadership and commitment.   For several years, the University of Massachusetts Medical School and UMass Memorial Health Care have greatly enhanced the focus and sophistication of medical research, teaching and care.  Endowment to support the significant projects and leadership of pre-eminent clinicians and faculty is one of our highest priorities.

  • University Chair: $2.5 million. Recognizes a professor who is pre-eminent in his or her discipline.
  • Faculty Chair: $1.5 million. Recognizes an outstanding faculty member who shows promise of national recognition.

Professorships attract and retain mid-career faculty who are focused on discovering and disseminating knowledge and have demonstrated leadership potential. The contributions of these individuals to pioneering research and to the professional success of researchers and graduate students are a vital part of the continued advancement of the research, education and clinical programs.

  • Professorship: $1 million. Recognizes a faculty member who has demonstrated outstanding success in research and/or teaching.
  • Career Development Assistant Professorship: $500,000. Recognizes an outstanding faculty member at a relatively early stage of his or her career who shows exceptional promise of outstanding success.
  • Distinguished Scholar: $250,000. Recognizes an outstanding faculty member for a specified (visiting) period, or to achieve greater diversity in an academic unit when a permanent opening is not available.

Fellowships for graduate students are more vital than ever to keep attracting the brightest students to the PhD program in the University of Massachusetts Medical School. Endowed fellowships will ensure the innovative education of the very best researchers to advance biomedical research.

  • Graduate Fellowship (Partial and Full): $100,000/$250,000.  Defrays cost of tuition, basic fees, room and board for an outstanding graduate student with demonstrated financial need.

Research Funds are established for pioneering work to probe questions not likely to be funded by government of other traditional funding sources. Accomplishments of the UMass Medical School's and UMass Health Care's younger researchers come predominantly from private funding.

  • Faculty Research Fund: $100,000. Defrays costs directly related to research in a particular academic department.
