"Whenever I stop to think of my many encounters with rescue and medical personnel during my emergency visit to Barre Family Health Center, followed by my transfer by LifeFlight helicopter to UMass Memorial Medical Center, I am amazed that the right decisions could be made by so many different people at so many critical points in my life. There is no doubt that I live today because the Barre Family Health Center was, and is, available to us all when an emergency occurs. I am a walking miracle."
Dick Bray, Barre, MA |
The new Barre Family Health Center opened in July 2007, and hundreds of residents of the Central Quabbin Region had the opportunity to tour the new facility after the recent ribbon-cutting ceremony.
The Barre Center is the only rural academic health center in the state and represents UMass Memorial's commitment to providing quality health care that is "close to home." It is a community practice of UMass Memorial Medical Group and a residency training site for Family Medicine for the University of Massachusetts Medical School.
Due to tremendous growth in patient volume, the need to expand the center was critical. The new $6.6 million Barre Family Health Center is double in size and supports a volume of up to 45,000 patient visits per year. This is a welcome addition to a community whose population continues to grow at a rate of 6% per year, triple the state average.
The community helped raise nearly $2.5 million in private philanthropy. Thanks to the generous support of individuals, corporations and foundations, the Barre Family Health Center continues to provide the best of health care "close to home" and with more services and features.
Among them:
- 24 treatment rooms (18 currently)
- Discrete area for Stress Testing
- Dedicated, private space for phlebotomy
- CT Scan, Mammography, Bone Density Testing
- Dedicated Physical-Occupational Therapy Rooms
- Casting Room
- Enhanced services for women and children
