The University of Massachusetts Medical School is located in Worcester, mid-way between the other two University of Massachusetts campuses at Amherst and Boston. UMMS is a medical school, research center, and teaching hospital which, although located in Worcester, is responsible for providing mental health services in non-forensic and forensic facilities throughout Massachusetts.

Worcester is located 40 miles west of Boston and within 1-1/2 hours from Cape Cod, Providence, and the Berkshires, skiing in Vermont and New Hampshire, and Maine. Worcester is the site of Clark University, College of the Holy Cross, and Worcester Polytechnic Institute. Housing in the Worcester area is less expensive than Boston but still well above the national average. Apartment rental near UMMS ranges from about $750 - $1,000 per month. Apart from auto insurance, other household and everyday expenses are average compared to most U.S. cities and the Northeast region.
