Doubeni named interim Associate Vice Provost for Diversity

Chyke Doubeni, MD, MPH, assistant professor of family medicine & community health, has accepted the position of Associate Vice Provost for Diversity on an interim basis. This newly created position will serve as a platform for the development and implementation of an institutional strategy that will lead to a faculty more representative of the diverse populations UMMS serves. Dr. Doubeni will report to Terence R. Flotte, MD, dean of the School of Medicine and provost and executive deputy chancellor.

Doubeni will work with departments and programs to strengthen the environment for underrepresented minorities and create a strategy for enhancing recruitment. The position in its permanent status will report to the Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs. Doubeni brings a unique understanding of the importance and challenges of diversity in the academic environment. He has played a leadership role in several diversity efforts at the Medical School, particularly on embracing diversity and enhancing cultural co-learning to maximize the enormous benefits that come from diversity. A graduate of the UMMS Faculty Diversity Scholars Program, he has a strong academic and leadership background including training in emergency medicine and in multiple surgical specialties. He also served as medical director of a community health center in North Carolina.
