Wellness at UMMS

Task force launches Web site, programs and a logo design contest

Businesses throughout the country have recognized that they must be proactive in encouraging their employees to live healthier, more active lives. This not only increases productivity but helps reduce health care costs. In an effort to improve the lives of the members of the UMMS community, the UMMS Wellness Initiative was launched a year ago in partnership with the Massachusetts Department of Public Health.

To help capture the spirit of current programs and the excitement of a new year of ideas,

the Wellness Task Force is sponsoring a logo design contest for the Wellness Initiative.

One of the first steps was to assemble a task force and conduct a survey of employees. They were asked to define their wellness needs, and the results helped in the development of an institutional program that employees would value and use. Overwhelmingly, employees said they wanted increased access to opportunities for physical activity and healthier eating.

One outcome of the survey and the Wellness Initiative was development of the new Wellness Web site. Employees can download indoor and outdoor walking maps of the University campus and an outdoor walking map of South Street campus in Shrewsbury. They can also join the American Heart Association’s Start! Walking Program, where they can track their daily physical activity and food intake and find numerous other resources for improving their health through physical activity. The Wellness Initiative also sponsors subsidized yoga classes and provides free passes to the 45 Massachusetts Audubon Society sanctuaries.

To help capture the spirit of current programs and the excitement of a new year of ideas, the Wellness Task Force is sponsoring a logo design contest for the Wellness Initiative. Individuals are invited to create a logo that encourages wellness in the UMMS community. The winner will win a gift certificate to Trader Joe's. Visit the Wellness Web site for details.

The growing Wellness Initiative at UMMS has a goal of enhancing the lives and promoting the health of all members of the community. Everyone is encouraged to take advantage of the opportunities made available through this initiative.
