Our Underserved Community
As a community-based residency, we are committed to supporting organizations who offer aid to the most vulnerable members of our society.
North Central Massachusetts includes the urban cities of Fitchburg, Gardner, and Leominster, and the smaller and more rural surrounding towns of Ashburnham, Ashby, Ayer, Devens, Harvard, Hubbardston, Lunenburg, Shirley, Templeton, Townsend, Winchendon, and Westminster. Based on 2009 population estimates from the US Census Bureau, these cities and towns have a combined population of 186,697. The area is also home to a large and growing number of Portuguese speakers from Brazil. In fact, the greatest number of foreign born residents from any single country in the Fitchburg and Leominster area were from Brazil (9.3% of foreign born residents.)
As of 2010, the city of Fitchburg had a population of just over 40,000 and just over 75% held a high school degree, while 15% had attained a college degree.
Over the past several years, unemployment rates have risen above state averages. The most recent figures released by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics show that the unemployment rate in the Leominster, Fitchburg, and Gardner reporting area was 10% in May 2011. This number is significantly higher than the state average of 7.4% for the same time period.
