In the U.S., about 15 million people
have asthma.

Although asthma affects people of all ages, it often starts in childhood and is more common in children than adults.

Asthma is a chronic lung disease that inflames and narrows the airways. With today’s knowledge and treatment, most people who have asthma are able to manage the disease. If you have asthma, talk with your doctor or nurse practitioner about how to:

  • Avoid things that trigger asthma.
  • Stop smoking, or help a family members stop smoking.
  • Keep track of your peak flow.
  • Correctly use inhalers and rescue medication.
  • Create an action plan.
