Dr Lidz

Dr. Charles W. Lidz is a Research Professor of Psychiatry.Most of Dr Lidz research is related to ethical issues in research and clinical care. This includes a study of how clinical researchers manage the competing interests in providing excellent clinical care to their subjects and following protocols that often, of necessity, restrict the provision of clinical care. Related work focuses on therapeutic misconception in research subjects and a study of decision making in IRBs. Dr. Lidz is continuing analyses of previously collected data on violence and mental illness.

Research Interests:

  1. Ethical issues in medicine and psychiatry 
  2. Voluntariness and coercion in mental health care
  3. Violence involving people with mental illness 

Ongoing Projects:

An Observational Descriptive Study of IRB Practices
PI:   Charles Lidz, Ph.D.     Co-PIs: Paul Appelbaum, M.D., Philip Candilis, M.D., & Robert Arnold, M.D. 
Personnel: Suzanne Garverich, Kim Smith, Tara Zandi, Antonia Seligowski.

This is an NIH/NCI funded multi-site descriptive study of Institutional Review Board decision making at ten top academic medical research institutions across the nation.(06/01/2006 - 04/30/2011)
