Mammalian hosts have evolutionarily developed the innate immune system and the adaptive immune system to combat invading pathogens. With the recent discovery of  Toll-like receptors (TLRs) and then retinoic acid-inducible gene (RIG-I)-like receptors (RLRs), the importance of innate immunity in viral pathogenesis has been reinforced. The long-term goal of my research is to understand how virus infection-induced inflammatory responses, initiated by the innate immune system through germline-encoded pattern-recognition receptors (PRRs), regulate the adaptive immune response and immunopathology during acute as well as chronic viral infections. I primarily use both Lymphocytic Choriomeningitis Virus (LCMV) and Vesicular Stomatitis Virus (VSV) models to address these issues.  In addition, I am also interested in developing prophylactic and therapeutic strategies to protect hosts with innate immune deficiency from viral infections.
