Undergraduate Medical Education

Medical SchoolOur traditional MSIV elective continues to be successfully directed by Dr. Eric Schmidt.  The monthly rotation continues not only at our new University ED but we now have expanded their clinical arena to include the Memorial ED.  We hope to soon include clinical experiences at Clinton, Marlborough and affiliated sites.  Additional improvements include assigned preceptors in the ED, procedure cards and added exclusive lecture instruction.  Students participate in suturing labs and we have them try to resuscitate the simulation manikins in the UMMS simulation center.  These changes have been well received and given the students more opportunities to interact with the faculty.

The Physical Diagnosis in the Emergency Department (PD in the ED) course enters its 10th year as part of the second year physical diagnosis curriculum. Forty students spend time in the ED learning abnormal physical exam findings of our patients with our EM faculty.  These bright young students love being in the ED and our faculty gets to actively introduce students to proper examination techniques and shock them with the occasional trauma or arrest!

We also now offer a Wilderness Elective led by Drs. Fran Renzi (see below).  Offered as an enrichment elective, several sessions throughout the year discuss environmental emergencies and management techniques in the field.  The course is highlighted by workshop stations on Wachusett Mountain with docs as mock hypothermia and trauma victims.  Students then have to creatively figure out solutions with only the pack on their back.  By the end of the day, it’s great to see Attendings mummified in wraps and straps by the students!

Other great activities in the division include sponsoring Emergency Medicine Interest Group (EMIG) activities including simulation education, ultrasound workshops and career guidance meetings and opportunities to attend emergency medicine lectures.  As the medical school continues to revise its entire four year curriculum, we are hopeful to play an even more active role in the third year rotations.  More on this in future newsletters.

As a division, we welcome your ideas and participation if interested or collaboration if doing something swell at your site.
