From the Director:
Welcome to the University of Massachusetts Emergency Medicine Residency.
Emergency Medicine is an independent Department at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, where we have had a fully accredited, EM-1-3 program since 1987. We received a five year cycle along with strong commendation from the RRC during our last site visit.
Our 12 Residents per year are genuinely accepted and respected throughout the hospital where they have a reputation for being bright, skilled, motivated and fun.
The Residents’ experience is our number one priority – from our high acuity environment at UMass, a tertiary referral, Level 1 Adult and Pediatric Trauma Center to our community hospital rotations at Milford Regional Hospital with their outstanding teaching faculty, our focus is giving the residents the clinical experience they need and the support and teaching they deserve. Each year EM Residents are given progressively more responsibility in the Emergency Department, and ultimately function in an advanced supervisory role.
At UMass, we also have very strong relationships with our off-service rotations where faculty understand the unique interests and goals of our Emergency Medicine Residents and provide them with targeted teaching and focused experiences.
Our Emergency Department was newly built in 2006 and is over 66,000 square feet in size. We see more than 80,000 patients and have an admission rate of over 20%.
The Academic Emergency Medicine Faculty is organized into 9 different divisions. The depth, interest, and diverse training of our ED Attendings give our residents exposure and mentorship to essentially every area of emergency medicine.
