It is impossible to avoid diabetes in the practice of medicine, whether it be in the emergency room, the ICU, the primary care pavilion, the surgical suite, or the athletic field. Learning how to care for diabetes is a key element in the education of both physicians and nurses.
Undergraduate Medical Education in Diabetes at UMass
- Medical students and nursing students can participate in the diabetes education sessions conducted by staff educators.
- Drs. Rossini and Thompson lecture to medical students in all years of the curriculum:
- First year: Biochemistry course
- Second year: Endocrine pathophysiology course
- Third and fourth years:
- Inpatient clinical service supervision and teaching
- Outpatient clinic precepting
- Clinical conference lectures
Graduate Medical Education
- Outpatient clinical precepting of Endocrinology and Diabetes Fellows
- Outpatient clinical precepting of Medical Housestaff
- Inpatient consultation service supervision of Medical Housestaff
Postgraduate Medical Education
- Presentation of Medical grand rounds at the University of Massachusetts Medical School and affiliated hospitals
- Presentation of Medical Grand Rounds and Endocrinology/Diabetes Rounds at other academic institutions nationwide.
- Postgraduate continuing medical education course participation at the University of Massachusetts Medical School
Community Outreach Medical Education
- Lectures to local chapters of the JDF and ADA and participation in local "Diabetes Fairs"
