Mission

The Diabetes Division provides patient care as part of UMass Memorial Healthcare.

Our aim is to provide "cutting edge",quality, clinical care for all persons with diabetes mellitus. Our principal site of patient care is the Diabetes Clinic currently located in the Benedict Building on the University Campus of UMass Memorial Health Care.

The clinical mission of the UMMS Diabetes Division is implemented by the coordinated, team effort of physicans, nurses, educators, and support staff:

Physicans include:

  • Aldo A. Rossini, M.D., Krupp Professor of Medicine (retired)
  • Michael J. Thompson, M.D., Assistant Professor of Medicine and Director of Clinical Services
  • Samir Malkani, M.D.
  • John P. Mordes, M.D.

Patient Care Activity

In 2006, the physicians of the Diabetes Division saw more than 2,500 revisit outpatients, more than 200 new outpatients, and more than 250 consultations. The average wait for a new patient to be seen is short.

In 2006, Dianne Carter and associates saw more than 250 new patients and 2,500 revisits. She initiates insulin therapy for more than 50 patients yearly. Dianne currently helps supervise the day to day care of more than 100 patients whose diabetes is treated with an insulin pump.

The American Diabetes Association Program Recognition Award

In the early 1990's, UMMC was awarded Program Recognition by the American Diabetes Association This link goes to an external web site. This prestigious competitive award is given in testament to excellence in care of persons with diabetes. In Worcester County, only UMMC has competed successfully for this recognition.

UMass Diabetes Programs were again accorded this award in 1997.
