Starlight Celebration Benefits UMass Memorial Children’s Medical Center

the Marous FamilyUMass Memorial Children’s Medical Center presents the Starlight Celebration, their annual fundraising gala, on Saturday, October 23. Guests will enjoy an evening of great food, an amazing auction and an opportunity to mingle with friends, all while supporting a great cause.

This year, Wagner Motors hosts the Starlight Celebration at their Mercedes and BMW showrooms in Shrewsbury. This elegant and unusual venue enables us to truly emphasize that the Children’s Medical Center is the “Driving” Force in children’s health care in Central New England.

The Marouses, our 2010 STAR Family, will share how having a Children’s Medical Center in their own backyard was critical when their son, Teddy, was involved in a car accident and suffered severe head trauma. Kathryn Marous, describes her experience with the PICU team as “extremely impressive.” What surprised her was the high level of care families can receive outside of Boston.

Many people do not realize that the Children’s Medical Center is a children’s hospital within a general hospital with a full cadre of pediatric trained physicians and specialists. The CMC has the area’s only Pediatric Emergency Department, the only Level One Pediatric Trauma Service, the only Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, the only Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, and the only multidisciplinary inpatient unit staffed for the care of very sick children. To provide all of these services, we need the support of the community to enable us to buy specialized equipment, augment specific support services, and to create and maintain a child-friendly environment for our young patients and their families.

This year, we are raising money to renovate the Dr and young patientPediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU). This 11-bed unit admits 700 very ill children each year. Children admitted to our PICU may have experienced trauma, the acute onset of a life-threatening illness, the exacerbation of a chronic illness such as cystic fibrosis or diabetes, or they may need palliative care for end of life. Regardless of the diagnosis, the PICU staff is there to provide the most compassionate and high quality care for them and their families.

We are grateful to Wagner Motors for opening up their Mercedes and BMW showrooms to the Children’s Medical Center, as well as to the many other community and business sponsors who have generously contributed to making this year’s Starlight Celebration successful.
