Relationship with UMass Medical School
Founded in 1998 within the University of Massachusetts Medical School, Disability Evaluation Services draws on the academic, policy, research, and clinical resources of one of the nation's leading academic medical institutions. UMass Medical School and Disability Evaluation Services share a mission to improve health outcomes for those vulnerable populations served by public health and human service programs. Being part of the Medical School means Disability Evaluation Services has an unparalleled ability to develop and provide services to meet the diverse clinical needs of our customers.
Because Disability Evaluation Services is a public entity, we bring a unique understanding to the challenges faced by public health and human services agencies. We partner with state agencies to administer a unified application and disability decision-making process that meets the varying array of requirements for federal and state disability-based programs.
Our Disability Evaluation Services team also works with other programs within the Commonwealth Medicine division by referring cases for coordination of Medicaid benefits related to accident or other health care coverage, and consulting with the state correctional system on applicants who may be eligible for benefits.
