Requirements

Candidates should have a master's degree in public health or in one of the social, psychological, physical or biological sciences. Students without graduate degrees will be considered providing they have outstanding academic records and experience applicable to the program. While no minimum grade point average is required, students applying for admission must have demonstrated superior academic performance. In addition, students should have some research experience (student research assistant or employment in clinical or public health research or interventions).

Prerequisites

Satisfactory completion ("B" or higher) of introductory coursework (at least one full semester course each from an accredited institution) in epidemiology and biostatistics is required of all students. Strong applicants without these courses may be considered for admission; however full matriculation will be conferred only when the prerequisite courses have been satisfactorily completed.

Application for Admission

It is highly suggested that you submit your online application and personal statement as soon as possible (applications will begin to be accepted on September 1). This will allow the admissions office to open a file for you and assist you as you work towards getting all your supporting credentials. A complete application for admission must include all of the following:

  • An official admission application form through ApplyYourself
  • A personal statement of one or two pages describing your educational expectations, career aspirations, research experience and any special qualifications or experience
  • A current resume or CV
  • Three letters of recommendation from individuals who are able to assess past academic performance, research experience and prospective success in doctoral-level work
  • GRE (Graduate Record Examination) scores in verbal, quantitative and analytical areas taken within the last five years. The UMMS code number for the GRE is 3936. No department code is needed
  • Official transcripts from all undergraduate and graduate institutions attended
  • An application fee of $25 for state residents; $50 for non-residents
  • Foreign applicants must also submit TOEFL scores
