2010 Conference Brochure

 

This program is jointly sponsored by the Society for Airway Management and the University of Massachusetts Medical School Office of Continuing Education.

 

Program Overview: The Society for Airway Management (SAM) has developed this course to highlight the various approaches to educate and learn about effective training approaches, concepts and new devices to deal with airway management by various fields of medicine and by international experts both locally and abroad.

This educational course consists of didactic lectures, panel discussion, small group round table discussion format along with hands-on workshop with patient simulator sessions. There is also an Abstract and Scientific Exhibits with both oral presentations and poster walk-arounds with Professors. This year, two SAM Grant Recipients will present their airway research.

In addition, a pre-course workshop on Moderate Sedation and Advance Cardiac Life Support will be available for limited number of enrollees.

 

Target Audience: Anesthesiologists, emergency medicine physicians, otolaryngologists, intensivists, trauma surgeons, paramedics, certified nurse anesthetists, flight nurses and all other allied health professionals assisting with airway management should attend.

 

Educational Objectives : At the conclusion of the program, the participant should be able to:

  1. Describe methods to incorporate training in advanced airway management in different hospital settings.
  2. Describe new modalities of airway assessment.
  3. Discuss the uses and differences of various airway devices, during different airway scenarios, presented at the hands-on workshop.
  4. Describe a variety of techniques for maintaining oxygenation.
  5. Understand international perspectives on airway management from renowned speakers.
  6. Describe the challenges of providing airway management in austere environments.
  7. Describe unique challenges encountered during airway management.
  8. Understand important airway literature published in the past three years.


Call for Abstracts: Obtain details for submission from the website: http://www.samhq.com. The deadline date is July 15, 2010. A limited number of abstracts and scientific exhibits will be accepted for poster and six will be selected for oral presentation. Submit abstracts by email to Tmort@harthosp.org.

 

Trainee Travel Awards: We encourage residents-fellows in training to submit their scientific works. A select number of resident abstracts will be awarded a cash stipend of $500 to defray travel costs. Award winners will also receive free meeting registration. The trainee must be first author and presenting author of the accepted abstract. A letter from the Program Director confirming the resident is in good standing in their training program must accompany their submission.

  3. Identify presenter by author’s name
  4. Deadline is July 15, 2010

Comfort: Business casual is very appropriate for this conference. Although every attempt will be made to insure the comfort of our attendees, we suggest that you may wish to bring a sweater/jacket if you tend to be chilly.

 

Deadline: Pre-registration will be closed when space is full or on September 9, 2010 at the latest.  Registration should not be mailed unless receipt before that time is guaranteed.  On-site registration will not be accepted when space is full, so register early.  Please note that on-site registration will be accessed an additional $25 to the published registration fee.

On-site registration: On-site registration will be available (space permitting) and will be an additional $25 fee.  Please call the UMass Office of Continuing Medical Education at 508-856-1671 to verify availability of space prior to arriving on-site to register.

 

Weather Emergency Policy:   While the probability of delay or cancellation of the conference is highly unlikely, we recognize that we are subject to the vagaries of weather.  If a weather emergency does occur, and you are in doubt as to whether or not the course will be held, call 508-856-1671 after 6:00 pm on September 23, 2010.

Cancellation Policy: Cancellations prior to August 20, 2010, will be refunded minus $50 processing charge. No refunds will be granted for cancellations on or after August 20th.

Confirmation: All who are accepted for registration will receive written confirmation and directions.

Designation Statement:  The University of Massachusetts Medical School designates this educational activity for a maximum of 18.25 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)™.  Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

 

Nursing Accreditation:  This offering meets the requirements for up to 21.9 contact hours, as specified by the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing (244-CMR 5.04).

 

ANNA Accreditation: This program has been approved by the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists for 18 CE credits; AANA Code Number 32951; Expiration 09/24/10 – 09/26/10.
