“Beyond the environmental benefits, which are important in their own right, our sustainability effort is fundamental if we are going to continue expanding our science and clinical operations. We need to grow, but in ways that have as little additional environmental impact as possible.”

Sustaining the UMass Academic Health Sciences Center

The UMass Academic Health Sciences Center, which is the campus shared by UMass Medical School and the UMass Memorial Medical Center (University Campus) is in a state of perpetual growth. Today, that also means Growing Green, to make sure the expanding programs in research, education, and clinical care achieve the dual goals of sustainable institutional advancement and environmental stewardship.

This site provides an overview of the ongoing multi-layered sustainability program the institutions are working on cooperatively to reduce energy consumption, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, expand recycling and other measures that collectively limit the carbon footprint of the campus.

The campus Sustainability Committee has been working on these issues since 2004. Its ongoing mission has now been fine-tuned to address the goals Governor Deval Patrick’s Executive Order 484 “Leading By Example—Clean Energy and Efficient Buildings” and the American College & University Presidents Climate Commitment, signed in 2007 by UMass President Jack Wilson.
