Prerequisites

Prerequisite education must be completed in a general surgery, orthopaedic surgery, or plastic surgery program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) or the Royal College or Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.

Salaries

Salaries are competitive with other programs. As of July 1, 2009 the following salary will be in effect at the University of Massachusetts Medical School.

To all prospective applicants:

Thank you for your interest in the University of Massachusetts Hand Surgery Fellowship Program.  We are an accredited one year program with two fellows per year.

The goal of the University of Massachusetts Hand Fellowship Program is to provide a comprehensive learning experience for board eligible or board certified Orthopedic, Plastic, and General surgeons in the field of hand surgery.  The fellowship training includes the management of complex traumatic upper extremity injuries; reconstructive upper extremity surgery including congenital and rheumatologic conditions; and surgical and non-surgical management of upper extremity dysfunction. The duration of the Hand Surgery fellowship is one year.

The fellow will participate in a wide range of surgical procedures and clinic coverage in conjunction with the faculty of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery and the Section of Plastic Surgery. In addition, the fellow will receive state of the art training in microsurgical technique, didactic education, and collaborate in upper extremity research activities.  Research opportunities will include outcome studies, clinical trials, and basic science research.

Curriculum

The fellow(s) will attend all conferences related to Hand Surgery topics that are offered by both the Plastic Surgery division as well as the Orthopedic Surgery department.  These include formal core curriculum lectures related to hand surgery topics, journal clubs, anatomy dissections, and Monday morning case conferences.  The fellow(s), in conjunction with the PGY-4 Orthopedic resident on the hand service, will present cases at the Monday morning hand conferences. Additional conferences will be held at Hahnemann on a monthly basis and will be presented by the attendings of the Plastic and Orthopedic Hand Surgery divisions.  There is also a monthly hand therapy conference on the 4th Tuesday of each month at 7:00 a.m. and the fellow(s) are expected to attend and participate.  Each fellow will present one core curriculum lecture to the Orthopedic Surgery residents in the winter or spring. The fellows will partake in the hands-on microsurgical course and the flap course sponsored here at the University of Massachusetts Memorial Medical Center.
