Veterinary Pathology Services
The Veterinary Pathology Shared Resource is a joint initiative sponsored by the Department of Cancer Biology and the UMASS Memorial Cancer Center at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. The initiative has the objective to provide academically-oriented consultation time and scientific collaboration from a veterinary pathologist with expertise in mouse pathology and embryology to investigators at the University of Massachusetts Medical School.
The goal is to foster and enhance scientific projects that involve various animal models of disease (inflammation, infectious disease), phenotypic evaluation of transgenic and knockout mice, safety of gene therapy vectors, and cancer models (tumor xenografts, chemical carcinogenesis, metastasis, targeted mutagenesis) with the ultimate objective to publish innovative and academically sound research in the premiere scientific literature. The services will entail a board-certified veterinary pathologist with demonstrated expertise in mouse pathology available in the Department of Cancer Biology located on the fourth floor of the Lazare Medical Research building on the University of Massachusetts Medical School campus for consultation.
Every meeting is coordinated with an agenda set up through the Research Core Administration to arrange consultation time of the veterinary pathologist with interested UMASS researchers. Typically, a weekly maximum of one hour of consultation time with the veterinary pathologist will be allowed per each investigator and will be used to review histology slides, review details of experimental protocols, etc. The consultation room will be housed in one of the procedure rooms (LRB445) in the Department of Cancer Biology and will be properly equipped with a high quality dual-headed microscope with on-line camera.
