Our Medical School Relationship

Commonwealth Medicine is an entity dedicated to fulfilling the University of Massachusetts Medical School’s (UMMS) mission to serve the people of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts through public service. It emerged from the relationships that UMMS has fostered over the past 20 years with state agencies responsible for the provision of services to the Commonwealth's citizens.

Through these experiences, Commonwealth Medicine has integrated the academic resources and knowledge of UMMS with those of public agencies to develop creative solutions to their specific needs. Today, Commonwealth Medicine draws upon the academic resources of the Medical School to help public agencies in states across the country improve the delivery of effective and cost-efficient public health care to their citizens.

In turn, Commonwealth Medicine programs provide unique opportunities for both UMMS faculty and students. Medical School faculty benefit from collaborative access to research data on a wide range of specialized populations, while medical students enjoy hands-on opportunities to learn and train in an innovative clinical, community-based environment.
