Ronald J. Steingard, M.D.

Dr. Steingard is the Associate Vice Chancellor and Chief Medical Officer for Commonwealth Medicine.  In this capacity he also functions as the Director of the Center for Health Policy and Research.  Prior to assuming this role, Dr. Steingard was the Director of the Office of Clinical Affairs (OCA), which provides clinical decision support to Massachusetts Medicaid (MassHealth) and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Executive Office of Health and Human Services (EOHHS). Dr. Steingard functioned as the Medical Director of MassHealth and in this capacity, had the opportunity to participate in high-level policy discussions within state government.

Dr. Steingard came to UMMS in 2001 as Vice Chairman of Psychiatry for Child and Adolescent Services. He previously served as Acting Chairman of the Department of Psychiatry at Cambridge Hospital, and spent more than 20 years working and teaching at Harvard Medical School and its affiliated partners, including Children's Hospital Boston and Massachusetts General Hospital.

Dr. Steingard earned his bachelor's degree from the University of Pennsylvania and his medical degree from Penn State University. He is board certified in child and adult psychiatry, and is a Professor of Psychiatry and Pediatrics at UMMS.  Dr. Steingard has participated in more than 25 funded research studies, and authored more than 70 articles and book chapters, and has worked with United States Department of Health and Human Services as a consultant and subcommittee member.
