 Accreditation Statement:

This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the essential areas and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education through the joint sponsorship of the University of Massachusetts Medical School and Society of Airway Management. The University of Massachusetts Medical School is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians. 

Designation Statement:

Physicians: The UMMS designates this live activity for a maximum of 17.75AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)™. Physicians should claim only credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Nurses: This offering meets the requirements for up to 21.3 contact hours, as specified by the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing (244-CMR 5.04).

Course Description & Objectives: 

The Society for Airway Management (SAM) is comprised of a multidisciplinary group of physicians from Anesthesiology, Emergency Medicine, Otolaryngology, Critical Care, and Pulmonology Medicine, as well as CRNAs, paramedics and nurses. The 18th SAM Annual Scientific Meeting and Workshop has been developed to feature international experts in the various fields of medicine involving airway management. Many aspects of difficult airway management, in a variety of clinical settings, will be highlighted. This course will consist of plenary presentations, small group round table discussions, a Hands-On Workshop including a Patient Simulator Session, and Professor Poster Rounds. Audience engagement will be encouraged with question periods and an audience response system. There are Abstract Scientific Exhibit sessions, oral presentations of selected abstracts and opportunities to interact with product developers, manufacturers and distributors.

The theme of this year's meeting is a looking back at major changes with regards to airway management in the last quarter of a century and looking foward to what the future holds.

At the conclusion of the conference, the participant will be able to:

1. Describe advances in airway management devices in the past 25 years.

2. Define new challenges and apply lessons learned with regards to the ASA Closed Claims Project. 

3. Discuss new challenges with regards to airway management outside the operating room.

4. Describe the latest guidelines with regards to OSA.

5. Demonstrate strengths and weaknesses of algorithmic airway approach. 

6. Demonstrate current controversies with regards to extubation.

7. Outline steps to establish training and define competency in airway management.

Target Audience:  Anesthesiologists, emergency medicine physicians, otolaryngologists, intensivists, trauma surgeons, paramedics, certified nurse anesthetists, flight nurses, trainees and all other allied health professionals assisting with airway management should attend. 

Trainee Travel Awards:
We particularly encourage residents-fellows in training to submit their scientific works. A select number of resident abstracts will be awarded a cash stipend of $500 to defray travel costs. Award winners will also receive free meeting registration. The trainee must be first author and presenting author of the accepted abstract. A letter from the Program Director confirming the resident is in good standing in their training program must accompany their submission.

Submission details:

1. 250 words maximum excluding title, authors, tables, figures or pictures. Abstracts will be truncated at 250 words and evaluated only on what is contained therein.
2. Word document format, file sent via e-mail (Times New Roman, size 12 preferred)
3. Presenting author’s name in bold, name of institution, conflicts of interest should be disclosed, financial support should be acknowledged.
4. Deadline is June 15, 2014
5. Presenter will be notified via email
6. Submit abstract online via the SAM website at: http://samhq.com/new-sam-abstract-submission-form/. Confirmation of receipt will be sent within 7 days. 
  

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Registration: Pre-registration will be closed when space is full or on September 5, 2014 at the latest.  On-site registration will not be accepted when space is full, so register early.  Please not that on-site registration will be assessed an additional $50 to the published registration fee. 

Cancellation Policy:  If you cancel your registration BEFORE August 15, 2014 your fee is refundable less a $50 processing charge.  After August 15, 2014, NO refunds will be given for any reason-including weather and other emergencies.  Substitutions are always acceptable with prior notification.
