Basic Life Support (BLS)

The BLS course is designed to provide a wide variety of healthcare professionals the ability to recognize several life-threatening emergencies, provide CPR, use an AED, and relieve choking in a safe, timely and effective manner. The University of Massachusetts Medical School is authorized as a Training Center for the Basic Life Support Program by the American Heart Association.


Educational Objectives: At the conclusion of this course, the participant will be able to:

  • Explain the importance of early CPR
  • Recall the basic steps of 1 and 2 rescuer CPR for adults, children and infants
  • Explain the importance of early defibrillation
  • Recall the basic steps for use of an AED
  • Recall the basic steps to relieve choking for responsive and unresponsive victims over 1 year of age and for infants
  • Explain the importance of each link in the adult and pediatric Chain of Survival

BLS Provider: This offering meets the requirements for 4.8 contact hours for nurses as specified by the Massachusetts Board of Registration in nursing (244-CMR 5.04).

BLS Retraining: This offering meets the requirements for 3 contact hours for nurses as specified by the Massachusetts Board of Registration in nursing (244-CMR 5.04).

Nurses should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Others:

BLS Provider: Other professionals will be eligible for 4 continuing education hours from the University of Massachusetts Medical School.

BLS Retraining: Other professionals will be eligible for 2.5 continuing education hours from the University of Massachusetts Medical School.

Registration

You may register by fax or mail. Registration should not be mailed unless receipt can be guaranteed two weeks in advanced. The fee includes textbook, continuing education credit, and certification card. Note: This fee is non-refundable.

In order to receive the CME certificate, attendees must sign in on the day of the program.

The American Heart Association strongly promotes knowledge and proficiency in BLS, ACLS, and PALS and has developed instructional materials for this purpose. Use of these materials in an educational course does not represent course sponsorship by the American Heart Association, and any fees charged for such a course do not represent income to the Association.


BLS courses are nonrefundable . If you wish to transfer to another class date, you will be charged a $20 transfer fee. This must be done no less than 10 days prior to the original program date. Classes must be paid in full in order to receive a certification card and continuing education credits. A certification card will be awarded on the day of the course to those who complete it successfully and have paid for the course in full.
