About Us

The OCME of the UMMS/UMMHC Academic Medical Center is proud of its ability to competently develop and implement quality educational offerings for our learner audience, which are consistent with institutional goals, ACCME standards and AAMC guidelines. These educational offerings are developed with input from UMMC faculty, medical experts from other academic medical centers, review of relevant medical journals, and the feedback received from program attendees. Educational programs are designed to reflect the results of peer reviewed clinical research and best practices that have been published by reputable medical associations. American Heart Association, American College of Chest Physicians, and the American College of Emergency Physicians are examples.

Individual continuing education programs are planned as unique, in the aggregate revenue neutral, economic entities. Any profits realized from programs initiated by a UMMC department revert to the sponsoring department (80%), the OCME (10%), and the Dean (10%). Once dispersed these are expected to help finance future educational endeavors and offset deficits produced by undersubscribed programs. The overall continuing education program is supported by the medical school through salary support for the Associate Dean and for the CME Manager of Business Operations. The Medical School (UMMS) also provides the OCME with teaching equipment and space for training and administration.
