2) Describe the value of affirmations and when to offer affirmations to patients

3) Articulate the essential qualities of change talk

4) Differentiate change talk from sustain talk

SESSION 4: Responding to Sustain Talk and Managing Discord


By the conclusion of this session participants will be able to:

1) Describe the value of affirmations and when to offer affirmations to patients

2) Articulate Motivational Interviewing’s perspective on patient resistance

3) Describe ambivalence and its relationship to patient behavior change

4) Use a decisional balance to explore ambivalence

5) Use an Importance-Confidence ruler to promote patient change talk

SESSION 5: Developing a Change Plan and Consolidating Patient Commitment

By the conclusion of this session participants will be able to:

1) Describe the Motivational Interviewing Treatment Integrity Scale

2) Describe Motivational Interviewing Competency and paths to establish competency

3) List the steps necessary to complete the second Acting Patient Encounter and coaching/coding experience and receive credit for the certificate program
