2004 Workshop Results
Two workshops were conducted in 2004. In August 2004, a two-day National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) course was held at UMass Medical School, attended by approximately 70 researchers. The course consisted of lectures and hands-on demonstration of NCBI internet-based bioinformatics resources. Feedback from attendees was very positive.
2005 Workshops
There will be three courses in 2005.
Completed:
Workshop #1 -
Gene expression analysis using microfluidics-based RT‑PCR
- June 28 -30, 2005.
This workshop
focused on new technology for gene expression analysis of human blood cells. We addressed the design of relevant microfluidics cards and performing high-throughput RT‑PCR, using commercially available technology and in-house design of the cards. Course manuals detailing experimental methods were developed by Dr. Bosch and her team.
In addition to the training, expert analysis of the generated data was provided. We taught the course at UMASS Medical School.
Please check back here in the near future for a full run down on workshop results.
Workshop #2 - NCBI Bioinformatics Tools
and Resources - August 2-3, 2005
"A Field Guide to Genbank and NCBI Molecular Biology Resources"
August 2-3, 2005
Lecture: August 2 9:00-12:00 Goff S1-607
Workshops: August 2-3 (2 hour sessions TBA)
UMass Medical School

The Center for Infectious Disease and Vaccine Research and Academic Computing present
A Field Guide to GenBank and NCBI Molecular Biology Resources
, a lecture and hands-on computer workshop by NCBI staff on GenBank and related databases covering effective use of the Entrez databases and search service, the BLAST similarity search engine, genome data and related resources.
The course is free but registration is required. Workshop sessions are optional, but attendance at a workshop is restricted to those who registered for and attended the lecture.
In addition, time can be allocated after the last workshop for consults with the NCBI staff.

Workshop #3 - Techniques for the Detection of RNA Viruses in Biological Samples - December 2005
The third workshop will focus on utilizing
new,
high-through-put techniques for the detection of
viral nucleic acids
in biological samples
. Methods include detection of viruses in biological samples using DNA microarrays. The course will address the design of relevant microarrays and their use with biological samples, using commercially available technology and in-house design of the microarrays. Course materials will be developed by Dr. Bosch and her team
(Marcia Woda and Kris Xhaja)
including
two manuals, which will provide detailed methods and discussions as well as support material.
