Dr. Zi Zhang brings extensive experience in survey research to his role as director of the Office of Survey Research at UMass Medical School’s Center for Health Policy and Research. He oversees all aspects of the Office’s work — from survey design, sampling, and data collection to data analysis and reporting.
Prior to joining the Center for Health Policy and Research in 2009, Dr. Zhang spent nearly 14 years at the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, serving most recently as director of the Health Survey Program. In that role, he directed all aspects of the Massachusetts Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS). As the Massachusetts BRFSS coordinator, Dr. Zhang served on the BRFSS Working Group at the Centers for Disease Control and Preventions (CDC), representing 13 states in the Northeast U.S. He was also a member of the CDC’s BRFSS Expert Panel. In 2008, he received a CDC award acknowledging his expertise and leadership, as well as his support of the CDC during his three years on the BRFSS Working Group.
During his tenure at the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, Dr. Zhang also served as senior epidemiologist, conducting morbidity and mortality research. As project director, he oversaw environmental exposure assessment studies.
From February 2008 to March 2009, Dr. Zhang served as senior health care analyst for Neighborhood Health Plan, where he was responsible for designing product evaluation strategies and assessing cost and utilization patterns and trends. He also worked on quality evaluation and improvement initiatives and received a Key Contributor Award in December 2008.
Dr. Zhang is an Adjunct Clinical Instructor at Tufts University Medical School, teaching graduate classes in epidemiology and serving as preceptor for students in the Public Health and Professional Degree Programs. He holds a Master of Public Health degree in biostatistics and epidemiology from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. He earned his medical degree at Shanghai Medical University.
