Reference Laboratory Division

With multiple components of our Reference Laboratory Division addressing critical domestic and international public health issues, UMass Medical School’s Center for Health Policy and Research provides support for the development of quality-assured laboratory infrastructure and methods. We provide reference laboratory consulting, support services, training, and research.

Our Reference Lab Division is part of a strategic partnership with the Massachusetts Department of Public health. Through an exclusive agreement with the state’s laboratories, we develop, implement, and manage the delivery of new services and lab-based research activities that support domestic public health objectives.

Massachusetts Supranational TB Reference Laboratory
As a World Health Organization designated laboratory, we provide technical assistance and technology transfer to developing countries in support of diagnosing and conducting surveillance for drug resistant M. tuberculosis. The laboratory also develops and participates in extensive basic and operational research.

Food Emergency Response Network Laboratory
As a member of the national Food Emergency Response Network, our laboratory provides resources for detecting food contamination in Massachusetts and serves as a regional training center on behalf of the USDA.
