As Director of Cross Cultural Initiatives for UMass Medical School’s Center for Health Policy and Research, Lisa Morris develops policies and programs to support multilingual/multicultural staff and patients at MassHealth provider sites throughout the commonwealth.
Responsible for a $1 million budget for delivery of the Medical Interpreter Training, Translation Projects, and Cross Cultural programs, Ms. Morris provides assessment tools and curriculum for medical interpreter programs in Area Health Education Centers statewide. She was instrumental in establishing the Cross Cultural Sensitivity Bureau, which provides the MassHealth community with written material translated in a culturally responsive and sensitive manner.
Fluent in Portuguese, Spanish, and French, Ms. Morris remains active as a medical and general interpreter of Portuguese. Prior to joining the UMass Medical School’s Center for Health Policy and Research in 2000, she coordinated medical interpreting services for both Harvard Pilgrim Health Care and Charlton Memorial Hospital.
Ms. Morris is an Instructor in the Division of Family Medicine and Community Health at UMass Medical School.
She holds a master’s degree in science, training, and development from Lesley College and a bachelor’s degree in romance languages from Boston College. She completed a fellowship in cultural competence leadership with the Health Research & Educational Trust in partnership with the American Hospital Association.
