Research

Our laboratory conducts basic and clinical research in the area of type 1 diabetes. Basic research is currently focused on the genetics and pathophysiology of diabetes in rat models of the disease with particular emphasis on the T cell receptor beta chain and the diubiquitin gene. We are also in the early stages of a program designed to understand the mechanisms underlying type 1 diabetes following viral infection. Another program is studying the susceptibility of certain rats to multiple disorders including diabetes, arthritis, and thyroiditis. Finally, we are also participating in clinical studies of otelixizumab, an anti-CD3 monoclonal antibody currently in phase 3 trials in adolescents and adults with new onset type 1 diabetes and in clinical studies of non-invasive methods for measuring glucose concentration.
