CFAR Virology Core Facility

Training

The training session begins with an interview with the Core Director who will establish the baseline level of competence and knowledge of the potential users and includes reviewing of the NIH guidelines for safe-handling of pathogenic agents. The individual's serum sample is archived prior to working in the lab and the individual is briefed about the system in place for confidential HIV-1 serum testing. The individual is taken on an orientation "walk-through" to acquaint the individual with the day-to-day working practices, and is briefed regarding the accidental pathogen exposure reporting system. A hard copy of the biocontainment procedures to be followed while using the facility is provided to the individuals. The individual is also required to watch a video presentation of the safe practices in handling pathogens like HIV. PBiotech 2 - Lab 3 eriodic presentation of this video (or updated versions) along with a review of the biocontainment procedures are scheduled to serve as a refresher course for the users of the VC facility. Maintenance and other appropriate personnel will work in the lab under the supervision of the Core Director.
