Overview of Cell Biology Seminars Exposure to the broadest possible spectrum of ideas and experimental approaches within the scientific community is vital for the development of a career in research. The Department of Cell Biology maximizes opportunities for such scientific exchanges through its seminar series. Presented weekly, these formal seminars feature nationally and internationally prominent scientists, reflecting diverse research interests. Guest speakers typically spend the day in our department meeting informally with faculty, students and postdoctoral fellows. Recent guest speakers include Stuart Orkin (Harvard University), Ronald Berezney (Johns Hopkins University), Louis Cantley (Tufts University), Xio Fen Wang (Duke University), Renato Baserga (Temple University), Nelson Fausto (Univ. of Washington, Seattle), David Livingston (Harvard University), Helen Blau (Stanford University), Sherman Weissman (Yale Medical School), Judah Folkman (Harvard Medical School), Marc Kirschner (Harvard Medical School), Dan Gottschling (University of Chicago), Harold Moses (Vanderbilt University), Robert Weinberg (MIT), and Philip Leder (Harvard Medical School). Each department within the University of Massachusetts Worcester Campus offers seminar programs that are open to the University community. In addition, an interdepartmental program, "The Scientific Basis of Medicine", hosts internationally recognized leaders in a variety of areas of biomedical research, featuring topics of vital interest to both basic scientists and clinical researchers. The Department of Cell Biology holds an informal weekly "Chalk Talk" which provides the opportunity for graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and research staff to present and discuss current research results. Our weekly "Journal Club" is a forum for presentation and discussion of current research papers. Both the "Chalk Talks" and "Journal Club" are organized by the Cell Biology graduate students. One seminar each month is devoted to the presentation of laboratory research by Cell Biology faculty and senior postdoctoral fellows. The Graduate School of Biomedical Science holds an annual Graduate Student Symposium, providing a forum for graduate students to present their research findings to the entire Worcester Campus research community.
