Traffic and Parking Information

red puzzle piece  August 31, 2006: North Parking Lot

On Tuesday, Sept. 5, approximately 100 unreserved parking spaces will be made available in a new, temporary parking lot at the corner of North and First Roads (behind the library) in the space most recently used as a construction staging area.  This will be a temporary parking lot, which will help offset any unreserved spaces that may be taken out of service from time to time during construction of the new Advanced Education and Clinical Practice Center (AECPC) at the south end of campus adjacent to the new South Road Garage. Plans call for the area to be returned to green space when the AECPC is completed.

Faculty, students and staff with unreserved parking privileges who park in this lot should note the following:

  • A portion of the lot will be used for construction activity on the facade, so it is essential that individuals who use this lot park within marked spaces.
  • Because the entrance and exit to this new lot will be located on First Road in close proximity to the Basic Lot entrance/exit, drivers and pedestrians should  exercise caution when entering and exiting the lot.
  • First Road is one-way traffic only, except where it is designated for two-way traffic between North Road and the Basic lot entrance only. South of this  point, First Road is one-way, north to south traffic.
  • Please note that the doors in the library and the basic and clinical science towers adjacent to the new parking area are alarmed and designated for emergency use only. They are not to be used to access this parking lot.  Please use the Clinical or Student Entrances.

red puzzle piece  July 26, 2006: First Road Parking Garage Announcements

In order to continue this summer's First Road Parking Garage comprehensive refurbishment and preventive maintenance project, the following closures will occur in the coming weeks. The new South Road Garage is not impacted in any way by this work.

  • On Saturday, July 29 at 8 a.m., the First Road Garage will close completely for approximately 24 hours so that the entrance off South Road can be repaved. Vehicles parked in the garage when the work begins must use the First Road exit on Level 1 to leave the garage. During this 24-hour closure, people who normally park here may park in any other lot on campus with the exception of the Clinical Lot.
  • For 7 days--beginning Monday, July 31 and ending Sunday, August 6--Level 6 of the First Road Garage will be closed. Unreserved parkers accustomed to using Level 6 can park in either the South Road Parking Garage or the Pine Tree Parking Lot; there continues to be adequate space due to the decreased campus population in the summer months.
  • The stairwell/elevators in the First Road Parking Garage will be inaccessible Saturday, August 5 & Sunday, August 6, in preparation for the replacement of the elevator. During this 48-hour period all upper levels of the garage must be accessed through the exterior ramps on the south side or the terraced stairs on the north side.

red puzzle piece  June 26, 2006: Section of Second Road to close

The segment of Second Road that runs from Third Road in front of the West Hospital Entrance and the road that runs in front of the Medical School Main Entrance will permanently close to all non-emergency vehicle traffic at 6 a.m., Monday, June 26. All cars, including those exiting the main Hospital/Benedict Building Patient Pick-Up/Drop Off area will be directed down Third Road. Faculty, students and staff being dropped off for work or classes at the Medical School are encouraged to do so in front of the First Road Parking Garage across from the Medical School Entrance on First Road. This closure will facilitate a number of changes that will be made to enhance the pedestrian experience on campus. Over the course of the next approximately six weeks, the temporary road that runs in front of the Medical School's Main Entrance will be removed and converted to green space. In addition, the construction staging areas currently located across from the Medical School and West Hospital entrances, will also be disassembled and the space reseeded.

red puzzle piece    June 19, 2006: First Road Parking Information

Beginning Monday, June 19 at 4 a.m., a number of parking spaces on the 6th Level of the First Road Parking Garage will be taken out of service for approximately five weeks to facilitate the First Road Parking Garage refurbishment and preventive maintenance project.

Ample unreserved parking spaces are available on Levels 4 and 5 of the South Road Parking Garage and the Pine Tree, West and North Road Parking Lots. The impact on faculty and staff with unreserved parking privileges on this level should be minimal.

red puzzle piece  May 25, 2006: Clinical Parking Lot to re-open

The Clinical Parking Lot will re-open for use by those with Clinical Lot privileges at 6 a.m., Wednesday, May 31. Individuals with parking privileges and hanging tags for this parking lot may resume parking there at that time. If you previously had Clinical Parking Lot privileges and are unsure as to your current parking status, please contact the Parking Office at 508-856-5631 or by email at parking@umassmed.edu .

The Clinical Parking Lot is designated for Clinical Lot hanging tags only, 24 hours a day.

The Clinical Entrance (near the Credit Union) will also open to staff and visitors at that time.  Please note that outside normal business hours (6 a.m. to 6 p.m.), the entrance will be accessible only to staff and students with valid identification badges.

The previously designated metered Credit Union parking spaces will also return to service.  These 30-minute meters are for use by patrons of the Credit Union while on Credit Union business only .

Please note that the new ambulance bay is located just outside this entrance, and as such, there is significant vehicle traffic. Drivers and pedestrians should be alert to incoming ambulances and use caution in this area. Also note that there is no longer a designated smoking area behind the Medical School. There is NO smoking in the Clinical Parking Lot and Clinical Entrance area.

UPDATED: PARKING TRANSITION INFORMATION

Thanks to all students, faculty, staff, patients and visitors for the cooperation and patience over the past few weeks as many parking and traffic changes took place on the University Campus.

Parking & Access Control is aware that there is a need to continue to adjust unreserved spaces. To rectify some of the transition issues we've been experiencing, numerous adjustments have already been made ( as detailed here ) and we will continue to monitor parking availability. Staff are also be on-site throughout the day to direct staff to available lots.

As patients and visitors and members of the UMMS and UMass Memorial community continue to adjust to these changes, please remember that:

  • With both employee and patient vehicles accessing the South Road Parking Garage, exiting traffic will be notably increased throughout the day. For this reason, it is imperative that pedestrians walking to and from the garage enter the facility via the designated entrance and not by the exiting traffic lanes.
  • First Road, with the exception of the area at the entrance to the Basic Lot, and which runs in front of the Aaron Lazare Medical Research Building, is one-way, north-to-south traffic only. Please obey all traffic laws and follow the direction of Public Safety personnel when traveling on First Road.
  • The former First Road entrance to the First Road Parking Garage has been changed to an exit only. All students and staff should enter the First Road Parking Garage from the entrance off of South Road for all reserved and unreserved parking.
  • Staff from Parking & Access Control and Public Safety are working to implement a parking and traffic strategy agreed upon by the senior administration of both UMMS and UMass Memorial; they deserve our respect and courtesy.

We welcome feedback on the transition thus far and encourage students and staff to send constructive comments to Campus.Mod@umassmed.edu.
