The UMass Medical School community honored the institution’s educators at the 2012 Education Recognition Awards ceremony held on Tuesday, April 10. This annual ceremony, now in its 14th year, brings the campus together to celebrate achievements in teaching and mentoring, and exemplifies the Medical School’s supportive and collaborative learning environment. This year, BMP’s very own, Professor William Royer, was awarded the Lamar Soutter Award for Excellence in Education. In memory of UMass’ founding Dean, this award recognizes faculty who have an established track record of excellence and, by their performance, leave an indelible imprint on UMass and American medical student education. Bill was recognized for his reorganization of the Medical Biochemistry course in which the focus became less a litany of topics and more a disease-centered curriculum, thereby teaching in a format that medical students perceived as more accessible and interesting. Bill is a star educator, and indeed he was awarded a STAR award by the EPC last year! We are fortunate to have benefitted in so many ways from his dedication and contributions to education. He is truly deserving of the Lamar Soutter Award. Congratulations Dr. Royer!!!
