By the end of year 1, all students must complete the core curriculum, the laboratory rotations requirements, and a program-specific advanced topics course. Prior to the beginning of year 2 they must select a thesis advisor and GSBS program.

Each program offers a specialized curriculum that comprises: 1) required and elective courses appropriate to the field; 2) a qualifying examination conducted by the program faculty and, 3) thesis research sponsored by a faculty member of the program. Requirements for specialization are detailed in descriptions of the Academic Programs and Courses. Below, we outline the general course of study for students of the Basic and Biomedical Sciences Division.
