On-call Responsibilities

A resident, depending upon his level of training and staffing/O.R. needs at that particular time, will do an average of 4-6 calls per month.  There will always be first and second call residents in-house. Responsibilities include management of O.R. cases, as well as pre-operative assessments of patients scheduled as add-on cases for the following day.  Residents will also be responsible for airway management hospital-wide for "codes", as well as management of post-op patients in the PACU.  On occasion, residents are asked to assist their internal medicine colleagues in placing invasive monitors or performing lumbar punctures.  During the SICU rotation, the typical resident is on call every 4th night.  After every call, the resident is scheduled as "post-call" or off the next day.  Each resident also receives meal vouchers for the cafeteria for each call that they do.
