Clinical Experiences and Curriculum
A residency in anesthesiology consists of a four-year continuum. There are three years of clinical training in anesthesiology (the CA-1 through CA-3 years) following the Clinical Base year (formerly known as the internship).
For applicants matching in March, 2010, we will offer four four-year residency positions (that include the Clinical Base year), and four three-year positions (that do not include the Clinical Base year). For applicants matching in March, 2011, all eight of our residency positions will include the Clinical Base year.
Persons applying for a three-year position in the March, 2010 match must also apply separately for a Clinical Base year. An acceptable Clinical Base year is accredited by the ACGME (or by the American Osteopathic Association for osteopathic physicians). The Departments of Medicine and Surgery at UMass each offer preliminary (one-year) residency positions that satisfy the requirements of the Clinical Base year.
