The Second Year (CA-2)

The CA-2 year is comprised mainly of one-month rotations in the subspecialties of cardiac, vascular, thoracic, pediatric, obstetric, ambulatory, regional, and neurosurgical anesthesia, chronic pain management, and two months of critical care medicine.  The obstetric rotation is done at the Memorial campus, which is the tertiary obstetrical referral center for central Massachusetts.  The chronic pain rotation is done at the UMass Pain Center which is also located at the Memorial campus.  The ambulatory rotation is done at the Ambulatory Surgery Center at the Hahnemann Campus.  All other rotations in the CA-2 year are done at the University campus.

Training in regional anesthesia is intermingled throughout the O.R. experience at the University campus, as well as the Hahnemann and Marlborough campuses.  Workshops in regional techniques, involving prosections with an anatomist, are conducted monthly, and residents are encouraged to use regional techniques on their patients whenever appropriate.  There are also workshops in management of the difficult airway and fiberoptic intubation techniques.
