Clinical Trials

Critical Care Research

In 1995 Dr. Stephen Heard formed a group of clinical personnel to coordinate research studies in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit.   The research group, now known as “Critical Care Research” consists of the following:

Director:  Stephen Heard, M.D.

Senior Research Nurse Coordinator:  Karen Longtine, B.S., R.N., C.C.R.C.

Research Nurse Coordinator:  Melissa O’Neill, B.S., R.N.

Research Coordinator:  Jaclyn Longtine, B.A.

Initially, the group focused their research activities in the SICU.  Due to a need for coordinating services in other departments in the hospital, Critical Care Research now contracts with multiple departments to coordinate their clinical trials.

Clinical Research Center

In 2004 the Critical Care Research group was asked to coordinate a HIV-Vaccine trial for the Center for Infectious Disease and Vaccine Research.  To participate in the trial we were required to provide a dedicated clinic setting for the study to take place.  The Clinical Research Center in the Department of Anesthesiology was developed at that time.  It is located in room S2-724.  It is equipped with an AED and basic emergency supplies.  Due to the fact that the center is located in the medcal school, emergency medical issues will be handled by calling 911.  There is a phlebotomy area, a waiting area and an examination room.  The nurses that staff the center are ACLS certified.  For questions regarding use of the room, please call (508) 856-6970.
