Apartment and Hotel Accomodations

Individuals must make their own rental arrangements. There is no on-campus housing available at UMMS and the University does not have an office dedicated to assist individuals in making such arrangements.

Housing costs vary widely depending on the neighborhood, the condition of the dwelling, and amenities included. Do not rent a house or an apartment before you have seen it. Rent usually does not include costs for heat, electricity, hot water, gas for cooking, telephone charges, parking fees, cable tv or furniture. Most apartments are unfurnished, many do not have refrigerators, and very few are air-conditioned. Always ask the landlord or realtor to clarify what is included in the monthly rent.

When renting an apartment you are typically required to pay a one month security deposit plus the first and last month's rent.  The security deposit will be returned to you when you leave so long as there has been no major damage to the apartment.  For your own protection, we recommend that you examine the apartment carefully before you sign the lease (contract) and get a written statement from the landlord or realtor about the condition of the apartment at the time you move in.

Newcomers without confirmed housing may want to arrive two to four weeks before their UMMS appointment or graduate studies begin in order to locate suitable accommodations. Families generally need more time to locate housing.
