Chief Resident Immersion Training (CRIT) in the Care of Older Adults was originally developed at Boston University Medical Center with support from the Donald W. Reynolds Foundation. The overall goal of the UMMS program is to foster collaboration interdisciplicarily and interprofessionally in the management of complex older patients. The program provides chief residents with a combination of training focused on improving Chief Residents' understanding of geriatrics principles, as well as on their leadership and teaching skills. Chief Residents play a key role in the quality of patient care, medical student and resident training, mediating between faculty, nursing staff and residents, and communicating with patients and families.
The University of Massachusetts Medical School offered our second annual Chief Resident Immersion Training (CRIT): In the Care of Older Adults in spring 2011. Drawing on medical school faculty as hosts and teachers, the UMMS format included small group discussions, mini-lectures, and individual mentoring sessions toward each chief resident developing his or her own "action plan" to be implemented in their respective departments during the 2011-2012 academic year.

Who should attend?
Rising chief residents from throughout UMass Memorial Medical Center are invited to attend the retreat-style CRIT weekend of multidisciplinary, interactive, case-based programming, tailored to hone chief residents' skills in geriatric principles.
Small group discussions, mini-lectures, and individual mentoring sessions - all hosted and taught by medical school faculty - will revolve around one case study of a surgical patient with underlying cognitive impairment, beginning with the pre-operative determination of capacity, continuing through managing post-operative delirium and formulating a discharge plan.
Individually mentored by a member of the CRIT faculty, each future chief will design an "action plan" that addresses a geriatrics clinical or educational issue that will be implemented in his or her department during the 2012-2013 academic year.
Chief Resident Program Directors are also invited and encouraged to attend for the opportunity to collaboratively mentor their rising chiefs.
