Chancellor Michael F. Collins writes in today’s Wall Street Journal that universal patient identifiers, or UPIs, are the most efficient way to connect patients to their medical data. In the WSJ Big Issues special report on health care, Chancellor Collins argues the answer to the question, “Should every patient have a unique ID number for all medical records?” is a resounding yes. “Using today's best technologies and practices, UPIs could help dramatically improve the quality of health care, lower costs, accelerate medical discovery and better preserve privacy,” Collins writes.
