Neurology Residency Overview
Our Neurology Residency program offers four Neurology positions at each of the PGY-2 through PGY-4 levels. Preliminary PGY-1 positions in internal medicine (medical internship) are available in Worcester at both UMass-Memorial Medical Center and St. Vincent Hospital. We have 4 Neurology-Preliminary Medicine positions that we offer at UMassMemorial as an option as well. During the 36-month program of the Neurology residency, 21 months are devoted to clinical neurology through rotations on the inpatient neurology, vascular neurology, consultation and ambulatory services. The remaining 15 months are allotted to related disciplines and electives. We also offer in conjunction with our Psychiatry counterparts one Combined Neurology and Psychiatry residency position each year.

| We hold as central to our department’s mission the education and nurturing of our residents’ professional growth and maturation. The focus is on supporting each resident’s individual educational needs and the achievement of these individual goals.
The clinical rotations provide a supervised, academic environment in which residents care for patients who have a wide range of neurological problems. Over the course of the three-year program, residents follow their own patients, not only during hospitalization on the neurology inpatient service, but also in the outpatient clinics over repeated visits. Residents also serve on the Stroke Service and as consultants to the medical and surgical services in the diagnosis and management of the neurological complications of systemic disease. Additional rotations in neuro-radiology, pediatric neurology, neuropathology and clinical neurophysiology, are an integral part of the curriculum. Advanced clinical training in subspecialty areas includes the care of patients with headache, dementia, movement disorders, epilepsy (including its surgical treatment), sleep disorders, multiple sclerosis and neuromuscular disorders. Supervised clinical electives in collaboration with neurosurgery and neuro-rehabilitation are also available.
Throughout their three years, residents participate in a structured and comprehensive educational program. Each summer and fall, faculty members lecture on 15-20 topics in emergency neurology (e.g. coma, status epilepticus, acute weakness, etc.). Mini-lecture series are scheduled throughout the year focusing on various topics such as NeuroLogic, Review of the Clinical Neurosciences, Neuroanatomy, and Journal Club. Review sessions covering a broad range of issues and a semi-annual mock oral also are scheduled. |
